Officer Daniel "Danny" Reyes served the people of San Antonio for fourteen years, the last six as a school resource officer at Lanier High, where he was less "police presence" and more "the guy who kept jumper cables, granola bars, and college brochures in his trunk for any kid who needed them." He died on April 9th of a heart attack, at home, at 43.
Danny is survived by his wife Sofia, a pediatric nurse, and their children Mateo (11) and Luna (7). Between the gap in benefits processing, a mortgage bought on two incomes, and the simple, brutal arithmetic of sudden loss, the family Danny spent every day protecting now needs protecting.
This fund was organized by Danny's unit with Sofia's blessing. The goal covers twelve months of mortgage payments, immediate expenses, and a seed for Mateo and Luna's education fund — the same fund Danny opened the week each of them was born, with $50 and a note that said "for whatever you become."
If you knew Danny — from the force, from Lanier, from the south side Little League he umpired in a uniform Sofia swears he ironed — you already know why this page exists. If you didn't know him, know this: the kids he looked out for are organizing a car wash this Saturday, because they want in. That was Danny's effect on people. It still is.
