Save the Maplewood Community Kitchen

For eleven years, the Maplewood Community Kitchen has served hot meals out of a converted storefront on Danforth East — no questions asked, no ID required, no judgment served. What started as four volunteers and a donated stove now feeds about 900 people a week: seniors on fixed incomes, new arrivals, shift workers between paycheques, and anyone who needs a seat at a table.

This spring our building changed hands, and the new owner raised our rent by 60%. We don't blame anyone — it's Toronto — but our budget, stitched together from small donations and one modest city grant, cannot absorb it. Without help, we close September 1st.

Here's the plan, and it's a good one. We've found a larger space four blocks away, a former bakery with a commercial kitchen already roughed in. The landlord, whose mother ate with us for years, has offered a five-year lease at below-market rent. We need first and last, kitchen equipment moving and certification, accessibility upgrades to the entrance, and two months of operating buffer: $45,000 all-in.

This isn't a charity that parachutes in. It's your neighbours cooking for your neighbours. If you've ever eaten with us, cooked with us, or walked past and smelled Tuesday's curry — this is the moment we ask. Come for the grand reopening. There will be butter tarts.
