Restore the Credit River Trout Habitat

The Credit River used to run silver with brook trout every fall. Decades of erosion, runoff, and a derelict low dam have silted over the gravel beds where they spawn, and the native brookies have retreated to a few cold tributaries — hanging on, but barely.

We're a volunteer chapter of stream stewards — anglers, biology students, retirees with waders — who have spent four years monitoring this stretch with the conservation authority. The science is settled and the permits are issued. What's left is the work, and the work costs money.

The project: remove the derelict Mill Lane weir (opening 2 km of upstream habitat), place 40 tonnes of clean spawning gravel by helicopter sling (the only way in without crushing the banks), plant 3,000 native shrubs and trees to shade and cool the water, and dig three refuge pools fed by groundwater seeps. The conservation authority covers engineering and oversight; our $30,000 covers gravel, stock, sling time, and tools.

Brook trout are a verdict on a watershed — they only live where water runs cold and clean. Bring them back and you've fixed the river for everything else, herons to hellgrammites. Donate, or better, show up on a planting day. We'll have extra waders, hot coffee, and 3,000 holes to dig.
