Mobile Dental Clinic for Northern Communities

In much of the Northwest Territories, seeing a dentist means a flight. Not a metaphorical one — an actual airplane, often booked months out, costing more than the filling. The predictable result: kids with preventable decay, elders managing pain with ibuprofen, and dental emergencies that become medevacs at fifty times the cost of the checkup that would have prevented them.

Northern Smiles Initiative has run pop-up clinics in school gyms for six years, flying in volunteer dentists and hygienists with equipment in hockey bags. It works, barely. Equipment survives about two years of that treatment, sterilization logistics consume half our budget, and we can only carry so much in a Twin Otter.

The solution is parked in a lot in Edmonton: a decommissioned mobile health unit, structurally sound, that we can buy and retrofit into a two-chair dental clinic with digital x-ray, proper sterilization, and winterization for ice-road travel ($95,000 all-in: $40k purchase, $45k retrofit, $10k first-season fuel and maintenance). It will serve eight communities on a rotating schedule, with priority booking for kids and elders, operating alongside — not instead of — territorial health services, who have formally endorsed the project.

We're a registered Canadian charity (receipts issued automatically). The dentists volunteer. The communities have asked for this by name, in band council resolutions we're proud to publish. What's missing is the truck. Help us buy the truck.
